Good point Wendy! You can use the software to set your material if you use the Custom setting on the Smart Dial.

Came here after looking at the Cricut website for guidance, this is much clearer!

Hey There! Great read. Helped a lot, Just want to mention that I have an Explore Air 2 and we do have that “set material” dialogue box. We just have to turn our dial to “custom” first. If we just turn our dial to Iron On it will not populate. 🙂

Oof, that’s a bummer!

The first things I would double check are that your htv is on the mat with the clear side down, and that you’re using the Everyday Iron-On setting or the Patterned Iron-On setting depending on which vinyl you are cutting. The patterned vinyl setting has slightly less pressure, so you can try that if you want, but if it’s cutting all the way through the vinyl AND the backing, I think it’s a bigger issue than just that small pressure difference. If you’ve already got the material settings correct, I might try fully turning off the Maker and unplugging it. Wait a few minutes and then plug it all back in and try again. Sometimes the machines get a little confused and just need a good reboot. 🙂

If that still isn’t working, shoot me an email at jessi(at)practicallyfunctional(dot)com and I’ll try to help you troubleshoot more!

I am sooooo new…just got a Cricut Maker and I’m trying to figure it out!

I followed the instructions and cut my first design, but it cut all the way through the vinyl AND the clear layer, so I had a jillion little pieces and they were all separate :/

What did I do wrong??

Nope, heat transfer vinyl comes with its own clear plastic backing that serves as transfer paper, so you don’t need anything additional.
